As the 2025 fall sports season comes to an end, girls varsity flag football and water polo have been recognized for breaking barriers. For the first time in eleven years, water polo participated in the 2025 Marin Country Athletic League (MCAL) playoffs, and flag football has received their first-ever MCAL championship pennant.
The California Interscholastic Federation (CIF), which is the governing body for high school sports, approved flag football as an official sport in 2023. This allowed the MCAL to start its flag football team league for high schools in Marin County. The founding of this league creates new opportunities for girls on the team, such as sophomore Charlotte Tovar. This year, the girls varsity team won their first MCAL banner in the playoffs against their rival, Novato High School. With the banner secured, all eyes are turned towards the next season.
“The team was so excited and so thankful that we won the very first banner for San Marin,” Tovar said. “I definitely think we have a possibility of winning again, if we put in enough effort, I’m sure we can do it, everyone wants to win.”
This season was also one to remember for the girls varsity water polo team. For the first time since 2011, the team made it to the MCAL playoffs, marking a huge step forward for the program. They finished fifth overall in the league with a 5-4 record, and their season did not stop there. Water polo also advanced to the North Coast Section (NCS) playoffs as a Division 1 team, earning the 11th seed and set to face the sixth seed, Monte Vista. The NCS playoffs are set to begin on Nov. 6, 2025, although the season ended with a loss by Monte Vista in the first round of NCS playoffs.
One of the biggest highlights of the season came with a historic win over Marin Catholic, the first in more than twenty years. This victory showed how far the team has come and how much they have grown together over the past few seasons.
“The win against Marin Catholic showed a lot of growth,” varsity captain senior Reese Cordero said. “Three years ago, when we played them, we lost 5-25. Our team has put in so much time and effort to get as far as we did this year and to come out with a 10-6 win against them.”
From the regular season through MCALs and into NCS, the team’s progress has stood out as one of the top-ranked seasons, making this a memorable year for San Marin girls water polo. The success of both teams this season shows the commitment and dedication of both the players and coaches alike.
