Junior Catania DeKeyrel, a girls’ varsity wrestler for San Marin High School, has emerged as one of the most accomplished wrestlers in the region, having
recently competed at the California State Wrestling Championships.
As a freshman, DeKeyrel medaled in the Northern California Section (NCS) tournament; the following year, she competed in the Napa Valley Classic, hosting girls
from California, Washington, Oregon, and Nevada. The tournament determines the ranking of players in NCS. In her sophomore year, DeKeyrel did not qualify. This year, she placed second, earning her a second seed in NCS. During NCS, she also placed second, competing against the nation’s fifth ranked wrestler. After placing in the top three of NCS, she qualified for state championships. DeKeyrel is the only Marin County Athletic League (MCAL) wrestler among both girls and boys to compete at state.
DeKeyrel’s journey to the top of girls’ wrestling started with 14 years of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, along side her friend, San Marin graduate Lyla Kondrashoff. Kondrashoff would later encourage DeKeyrel to join the wrestling team her freshman year.
“My freshman year, I was like, ‘Wow, that was difficult,’” DeKeyrel said. “Sophomore year was a lot better because our conditioning got better, and your body adapts to competition.”
Despite facing challenges and the pressures of being a varsity athlete and team captain, DeKeyrel always pushes herself to perform her best.
“I always say I’ll do my best, because you can’t do more than that,” DeKeyrel said. “And if I focus on the process of how I wrestle instead of the outcome, the outcome will most likely be how I want it.”
This season, DeKeyrel has a season record of 35 and seven, with all losses against state qualified wrestlers. She currently has 71 varsity career wins. Head wrestling coach and Health teacher Cory Boyd thinks DeKeyrel has a possibility of reaching 100 varsity wins during her high school career.
“It’s not unrealistic for her to finish with over 100 varsity wins,” Boyd said. “Which is always a big deal, and she’s also medaled at NCS three times.”
DeKeyrel’s achievements have set a new standard for girls’ wrestling not only at San Marin, but also across Marin County.
