Community college football continues to be a success story for many former San Marin football players. This year, a total of four players are carrying on their football careers through community college football.
Kicker Lars Rau and wide receiver Matt Goodin are two of these players. Rau is attending San Mateo State and Goodin is attending City College of San Francisco. Both community colleges have been very successful in producing Division I players. Each year, around 34 San Mateo State scholar-athletes earn scholarships and move on to four-year colleges, while City College of San Francisco has won 11 National Championships.
Rau, a five-star kicker, found himself with a Division I college offer from the University of Nevada, Reno. Despite Rau’s acknowledged skill set, his football experience spans merely a single year, leaving many questioning why he chose San Mateo Community College.
“I choose San Mateo because, with another year of experience, community college can help me get a wider range of offers as well as give me a bigger variety of options that I can choose from,” Rau said.
Rau not only wants to play football but also aims to secure a college degree.
“After San Mateo, I plan to attend a Division I school to play football and earn a degree.”
Goodin, a first-string player on the Mustangs this past year, is prepared to join City College of San Francisco.
“I chose City College of San Francisco because of the amazing coaches and their history,” Goodin said.
While acknowledging the college’s prestigious history, Goodin also has high hopes to go to a Division I school.
“I hope to land a Division I offer from another school to further my football career and education,” Goodin said.
