Valentine’s Day is often viewed as a holiday meant only for couples, filled with heart-shaped boxes and bouquets of roses. But in reality, it can be a time to appreciate all kinds of relationships, not just romantic ones. Valentine’s Day offers a chance to show gratitude to anyone who brings positivity into your life.
Instead of focusing on traditional dates or expensive gifts, people are choosing to celebrate this day through thoughtful actions. Acts of appreciation can be simple, like spending quality time together, doing something kind for someone else, or just letting people know they are valued and appreciated. These gestures often mean more than any store-bought present.
San Marin students plan to show platonic relationship appreciation this Valentine’s Day in addition to romantic ones. Some mentioned treating their loved ones to a nice meal, helping out at home, or spending quality time with friends.
“My friends and I are going to do Galentines, where we all go to someone’s house and bring different boards of food and hang out and just have a good time all together,” junior Taylor Testa said.
For some, buying small gifts or spending meaningful one-on-one time with family members can be the most heartfelt actions.
“One thing that I like to do is golf, so I’m probably going to be taking my grandma golfing at a nice course somewhere and just have a good one-on-one time with her for the day,” senior Dom Fenn said.
These ideas show how love can be expressed in everyday, genuine ways. By looking beyond just romantic relationships, Valentine’s Day becomes a celebration of all the connections that make life special. Whether it’s with friends, family, or even yourself, taking time to show appreciation can make the holiday more meaningful for everyone.
