David Glasgow is one of San Marin High School’s career resources, working with students to determine what their goals are after high school. He has been working for the Marin Board of Education as a Business Education Liaison for the past four and a half years, following his work for the Career Center at Stanford University. Glasgow meets with students to discuss career goals and different learning opportunities, but wants to do more than simply guiding students.
“Rather than me providing a plan, I want students to be able to look inward and be able to create a better plan for themselves,”
Many students do not start meeting with Glasgow until their junior and senior years of high school. Glasgow’s work is heavily based on his understanding of a student and their goals. He believes that meeting with them and developing a plan earlier in high school is beneficial since their career is influenced by showing interest and commitment to potential employers. Some students, such as senior Isabella D’Angelica, began working with him earlier; D’Angelica accepted an internship opportunity with the Novato Fire Department during the summer of her junior year.
“Before [meeting with him] I felt like I was a little too nervous to reach out and try to get these opportunities,” D’Angelica said, “I just felt like other people could have done it better than me, but he showed me that really anybody can do it.”
Part of Glasgow’s work is meeting with people from the community to design internships for students to build experience in different career-settings. He’s created internships with institutions such as Kaiser and Marin Science Seminar. Glasgow creates all the details of each program; each is labelled as a spring program, a summer program, or an autumn program. He meets with students primarily to evaluate their skills and provide them with the details he believes they need.
“[In high school] you only have 16 [or] 17 years of information about yourself,” Glasgow said. “And so my goal is to get students more information about what they like doing [and] what they’re good at doing. And so that will help them make better decisions about their next step.”
Aside from working for all of the Novato Unified School District high schools, Glasgow works for Tomales High School in the Shoreline School District. He moves between schools and is on campus at San Marin on Thursdays.
Most of the opportunities Glasgow finds and creates are sent out to any interested student or parent through his Remind group. Organizing a meeting with Glasgow can be done by emailing him at [email protected].
