Spanning from lead in the musical to a jazz musician who writes their own compositions, these San Marin musicians dedicate themselves to the program here.
Junior Gabbie Boggeri sings in Jazz Choir, and is a cast member of Musical Theatre. She also used to stage manage Katia & Company shows. Boggeri has been singing for most of her life, ever since she was a kid. She would sing and dance along to the TV.
“I had a third grade teacher who taught me how to play a few guitar chords at lunch once a week,” Boggeri said. “So me being the overachiever I am, I took those three chords and decided to just learn how to play guitar.”
Boggeri sings tenor in Jazz Choir, which is traditionally a male part, “Since there’s such a limited amount of people in the class, I actually sing tenor. You don’t see a female tenor very often and it makes me feel special.”
When asked about the music community here at San Marin, Boggeri said, “No matter what shows I’m in, I’ve always been welcomed in immediately. And I’ve always loved the cast.”
In late Apr., Boggeri will be playing the role of Adelaide in San Marin’s production of Guys and Dolls. Tickets will be available brownpapertickets.com or at the door.
Sophomore Zane Marshall plays alto saxophone in Advanced Jazz Band. He’s been playing music since the fifth grade, starting on clarinet and then switching to saxophone in the sixth grade.
Marshall grew up surrounded by jazz in his family. They listened to the music but didn’t play any instruments. He wanted to expand his knowledge of the genre, so he decided to pick up the saxophone.
Marshall also writes his own compositions that he brings to a jazz combo, which is a small, improvisation-based group. He recently brought a piece entitled Backhand for trumpets, saxophones, trombones, piano, and bass. This included a melody, a complex chord progression, and a general song structure. When asked how long it took him to write he said, “Took me 20 minutes to come up with, and about ten minutes to write down.” Marshall continues to write pieces and bring them to jazz combo, and hopes to perform them with the group at jazz recitals and festivals.
