Made in Marin is a local small business owned by Shannon and Carson Dohermann. In 2023, the couple found a passion for screen printing and tie dye, which led to the start of Made in Marin. Their store sells tie dyed items of clothing, hoodies, hats, and other items of clothing.
“We are a two-person team with big dreams of making Made in Marin a well-known brand in the Bay Area,” Shannon said. “We want to bring people together, spread joy, and positivity, and show off the best of what life has to offer in Marin County.”
The two run an Instagram account, @themadeinmarin, where they advertise their brand and also help promote other small businesses around the Bay Area. From food to other clothing brands to even different events held around the Marin, they are
very open about their adventures and day to day life.
“Another main part of our business is highlighting other locally owned companies on our Instagram and social media pages,” Shannon said. “We have over 18 thousand followers and have created a platform that helps get eyes on local businesses all over Marin, San Francisco, and the North Bay.”
With the growth of their social media, their sales have increased in Marin. During the holiday season they release items like hoodies and long sleeve shirts, to match the lower temperatures. Shannon and Carson love to do holiday themed items, but have mentioned how it‘s difficult as it‘s not something many wear year round.
“People love a holiday shirt, but they also want to invest in a nice piece of clothing they can wear throughout the year, and when you sell clothing, you don‘t want to set a limit on the amount of time you have to sell the items,” Shannon said.
Made in Marin has created a variety of clothing and accessories throughout the years, from baby clothes, to hats, to even bandanas for pets. Even though some of their merchandise has been phased out, being able to see the growth and change as the company changes with the Bay area community can be very inspiring to others.
Starting a business can be a struggle if someone may not have some kind of layout or plan. There are many branches to a business such as logos, workspace, social media, and more. Without some kind of guide things can get messy really fast. Businesses can change and their audience may fluctuate with it until the business may
settle on what they deemed fit to represent their brand.
“If there was anything, maybe we would have told ourselves [it would‘ve been} that there is so much adventure and unexpected fun ahead!” Carson said. “Without the families of Novato, all the farmers market fans, and all the customers who have bought something from our brand, we wouldn‘t be where we are today.”
Shannon and Carson’s work has brought the community together not just in Novato, but throughout the Bay Area. With the support they’ve received, they plan on continuing to expand with their brand and sell more merchandise in stores. For more information, visit madeinmarin.org.
