Introduction to the World of Healthcare, a new class available on campus, has begun this year for students interested in getting a clearer understanding of what healthcare is.
This semester-long class hopes to introduce students to healthcare careers, as well as expand their knowledge about medicine.
Introduction to the World of Healthcare is the first class of its kind available to students in Marin County. In partnership with the Marin County Office of Education, Novato Unified School District, and By the Bay Health, the class was created to give students a deeper view into various healthcare professions.
The class is taught through Career Technical Education, a program oriented towards setting students up for future careers through experience.
Combining the academics of healthcare with the skills and occupational knowledge, students will be given a better understanding of the healthcare pathway and how to prepare for it.
The course goes into detail about medical ethics that medical-based careers value and how to communicate properly when working in such jobs. The class is a semester-long elective taught by Kiran Sahota, R.N.
She completed a nursing program at a junior college and earned a master’s degree in nursing education at Chamberlain University. Sahota is passionate about teaching and wants others to learn more about healthcare.
“We want to introduce healthcare and give concepts and a basic foundation of healthcare to students,” Sahota said.
Other parts of the course include trends seen in healthcare and overall public health. Students will have the opportunity to get hands-on practice in these fields by attending field trips, participating in certification opportunities, and enacting role-playing scenarios.
Students will also get the chance to listen to guest speakers who will come in to talk about their professions in clinical and non-clinical careers.
Not only will guest speakers describe the professions, but the class will give students exposure to the multitude of healthcare professions in the field.
Sahota hopes this class will encourage more people to enter the healthcare field. “To be exposed to this from the get-go and be able to research, they [students] are more confident going into it,” Sahota said.
