“The Chalice of the Gods” by Rick Riordan was published in 2023 as a fantasy-adventure novel. Riordan, an American author born in San Antonio, Texas, first wanted to be a guitarist, but after transferring to the University of Texas, he found a passion for writing as he was studying English and History. While Riordan is known for many other books, he is most recognized for his popular Percy Jackson series, where he works to bring ancient myths to life in a modern setting. In 2005 Riordan published his first Percy Jackson book, “The Lightning Thief,” which quickly became very popular. Riordan published seven total Percy Jackson books with his most recent being the “Wrath of the Triple Goddess,” and has also turned the books into movies and a recent Disney+ tv show. Riordan has written several other books based on different mythologies including “The Trials of Apollo” and the “Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard” series.
This book interested me because I have read the previous Percy Jackson books, and enjoy how Riordan merges mythology into everyday life. I also enjoyed the plot for this book as it follows Percy on his first mission as he has to find and return the chalice of the gods before any of them realize that it is missing. This takes Percy on a rollercoaster of events ultimately leading him to battle Geras, a Greek god of old age, in a wrestling match. Riordan is able to depict the personalities of the Greek gods throughout the book like Posiedon, Geras, Hades, and several others while embedding them into a modern day setting. The “Percy Jackson” series is also easy to follow, making it enjoyable to read for new readers as well as people who often read.
I would rate “The Chalice of the Gods” five out of five stars as I enjoyed its humor, use of Greek mythology, and Percy Jackson’s continued battle of living his life with the Greek gods. Riordan is able to create stories that are enjoyable to read but also have a meaningful purpose that pushes across a deeper message of balancing everyday life skills. You will want to read Riordan’s newest Percy Jackson book and sequel to “The Chalice of the Gods,” “Wrath of the Triple Goddess,” as it follows the same timeline and tells a deeper story of Percy Jackson’s life.
