The Marin County Free Library (MCFL) has recently collaborated with the Novato Unified School District (NUSD) to provide automatic library cards to all students in Novato. Although library cards have always been free, this process is more immediate and beneficial to students so they can easily access the library’s resources. MCFL plans to expand the program to other school districts, with Novato being the first.
Libraries are known for providing access to a wide variety of books, but the MCFL offers much more. With a library card, students have access to online homework help, language learning resources, news articles, live tutors, and many other learning databases. Novato Teen Librarian, Nicole Hight, explains the benefits of students having direct access to these resources.
“The library would like to supplement the school library’s resources by providing the students with access to information that will help further their academic journey,” Hight said.
The MCFL gives students 24-hour access to all of its expanded materials that school libraries can’t offer, whilst encouraging students to care more deeply about their learning so they can use other resources that are equally as accessible.
This new program hopes to put the “U” in NUSD and unify Novato adolescents with a commonality of learning. This makes sure that every student has a library card and all have equal access to the help that they deserve.
“The library wanted to make sure all students in Novato had access to the resources they are entitled to use,” Hight said.
By going to a local MCFL, students can indulge in learning and put their education first.
