Despite the loss for a North Coast Section (NCS) title against the Acalanes Varsity Football team on Nov. 24, the San Marin Mustangs went undefeated (10-0) in the regular season and won the Marin County Athletic League (MCALs) Championship. After 17 years, the San Marin Varsity Football team beat Marin Catholic (10-6) on Nov. 4.
Head coach Dominic DiMare recently won the Charlie Wedemeyer Memorial Award on Oct.17, which is awarded to a remarkable coach. DiMare will receive a grant from the 49ers Foundation for his accomplishments and hard work.
“I feel that this award goes out to the entire San Marin community and players; they are the ones that earned this award,” DiMare said.
DiMare has been leading the Mustangs for 14 years, with the help of Dave Garbarino, Offensive Coordinator, and Damon Moore, Defensive Line coach.
“My coaches have helped me more than anything; all of them have significantly helped me physically and mentally,” senior quarterback Dominic Ingrassia said.
This is the 13th consecutive year the football team has qualified for MCAL playoffs. With winning the playoffs, the Mustangs’ average score was 25-40 points ahead of their competitors. Offensive Coordinator Dave Garbarino felt excited about winning MCALs and proud of all the hard work the player’s showed.
“The players prepared well, and like anything in life, if you’re prepared, you have the right mindset to be successful,” Garbarino said.
Before losing against Acalanes, the Mustangs kept their winning streak by working hard and getting into the right mindset. Sophomore second-string quarterback Daniel Rolovich prepared by running through offense plays and collaborating with his teammates.
“We prepared well by having offense go through walkthroughs and the whole team having a big meeting before the game to set the right mindset,” Rolovich said.
Ingrassia was also determined to defeat Marin Catholic.
“My biggest goal was to beat Marin Catholic after all these years,” Ingrassia said.
Coaches and players are proud of the talent this year and know each one of them worked to their best ability. DiMare has a lot of dedication to San Marin and is grateful for all his years of coaching; he couldn’t be more proud of the players’ success this year.
“The goal is the same every year here at San Marin – to build great student-athletes to be ambassadors for San Marin on and off the field,” DiMare said.
