Every year, poetry-loving freshmen partake in a poetry slam competition at the Performing Arts Center. The slam is an opportunity for students to develop and showcase their writing skills. One of last year’s participating students was current sophomore Alexandra Martinez, who appreciated that the slam allowed her to discuss modern-day topics she cares about.
“I just like writing [poems], writing them is fun,” Martinez said. “You get to talk about world issues and criticize the government.”
Martinez’s poem, “We love living in Amerika, Amerika” is about the experiences of Latinos living in America.
“Some politicians don’t like immigrants in the country, which is stupid,” Martinez said. “They come here for a better life.”

Because they are merely cattle, especially We, the People of Color
