The Mustang football team is 7-0 as of Oct. 20th, with four of those wins against their Marin County Athletic League (MCAL) opponents. They have won the state championship in back to back years (2021 and 2022) and have been selected to realign with teams across the North Coast Section (NCS) into a new league, after their 2023 season.
The league will contain teams ranked higher than San Marin, which will be a new obstacle as only Marin Catholic has been ranked higher than the Mustangs in the few years prior in MCAL. Although the jump may seem confusing to some, Athletic Director Tyler Peterson explains it thoroughly.
“Next year we will be in a league with 5 other schools that are competitively at San Marin’s level. That is the purpose of the whole thing: competitive equity,” Peterson said. The teams in San Marins league next year will be San Marin, Marin Catholic, Cardinal Newman, Rancho Cotate, Vintage, and Windsor. None of these teams next year will be in our division though.”
This may mean fans may have to give up the short drive to Marin rivalries in turn of more evenly ranked games, some players, like varsity outside linebacker Nick Rosiak, are motivated to play what he describes as better competition.
“I’m motivated because I want to win against better competition. As a team we all want to win and hate the feeling of a loss so we always are putting in our best quality work and as much of that as possible.” Rosiak said.
Although looking forward to the coming years may be exciting, players seem more focused on the current season.
“Well we have really been working hard this year and have built up our chemistry and it gives us the confidence to go really far this year,” Rosiak said.
New competition may cause the need for adaptation for the Mustangs, but players seem motivated to move forward and continue winning.
