From a poll of over 1,000 people, it was found that it takes approximately 43 minutes on average to get ready in the morning (Best Mattress Brand). At San Marin, many students take longer than this and some much shorter. Over the course of the past four years, seniors have developed routines that get them up and ready for the school day.
One of the most important aspects of a morning routine is how long it takes. If a routine isn’t timed right, students run the risk of being late to school. Some take as little as ten minutes, while others have much more time-consuming routines. For some, the time is spent showering, and for others it’s making sure they look presentable. Senior Bryn Ichinaga has a very speedy routine.
“I usually get up at like 7:35 AM to 7:40 AM, so it takes me like ten minutes to get ready,” Ichinaga said.
While she leaves little time to accomplish anything in the morning, she has a crucial step in her routine. She would rather be late than skip it.
“I have to wash my face and put sunscreen on, and I would make myself late for this,” Ichinaga said. “I apply sunscreen because I get sunburned really easily, and I don’t want wrinkles when I’m forty.”
Unlike Ichinaga, many seniors take much longer. Senior Vaughn Miguel takes around an hour to get through his routine each morning.
“It takes me, about, just under an hour, fifty minutes,” Miguel said. “First, I get up and I wet my hair; that’s sort-of my wakeup. Then, I eat breakfast, use the bathroom, and brush my teeth.”
While some students struggle to get up in the morning, senior Holden Martinez is not one of them.
“I wake up when my alarm goes off,” Martinez said. “I usually wake up at 6 AM and get out of bed at 7:45 AM.”
Martinez may only need one alarm to wake up, but this may not be the case for everyone. In his morning routine, senior Nicholas Di Pasqua needs a little more motivation.
“I have fifteen alarms set five minutes apart from each other,” Di Pasqua said.
While others can roll out of bed and go to school immediately, like senior Hayden Blair, many students have morning routines that help them get prepared for the school day.
“I pet my dog for motivation,” senior Sola Takeda said.
Besides wakeups, several seniors have morning routines that they absolutely need to do, and would even make themselves late to school to complete this step.
“I have to shave every morning to go to school,” Di Pasqua said.
“I absolutely have to do my hair,” Takeda said. “If my hair is messed up, that’s going to mess up my whole day.”
