On Jan. 15, Barbara Hernandez, College and Career Center Specialist, sent out an email regarding the change in requirements for community service hours for the 2021-2024 classes. This change was presented by Jennifer Larson and approved by Trustee Ross Millerick and the rest of the board.
Before this modification, students were required to complete 40 hours of community service to be eligible to graduate. The new requirements state that the class of 2021 has their community service requirements completely waived, for the class of 2022 students need to complete 25 hours of community service, the class of 2023 needs to complete 25 hours of community service, and the class of 2024 needs to complete 30 hours of community service as well.
The number of hours required of students has been modified due to the pandemic. Students have found it challenging to find non-profit organizations to volunteer at considering most organizations are closed and there are not many online opportunities available to students.
“Helping out the community and finding places to volunteer nowadays is difficult because most things are closer contact which isn’t allowed obviously,” junior Brandon Nguyen said. “It’s even harder because I feel like people today need even more support and assistance from others which includes younger students and elderly folk. Volunteering in person, even at places like food banks, limit the number of people that can be in the vicinity making that service also hard to complete.”
