The Girls takes place in Northern California during the 1960s. In the beginning of summer Evie Boyd, a lonely girl, is drawn in by a group of girls who were carefree and had a reckless ambience. Once Evie interacts with the girls she is instantly connected with Suzanne and becomes part of their circle. Soon to find out their circle is going to be an infamous cult from the 1960s that also has an infamous cult leader drawing people in. He has the cult hidden in the mountains living in a run down ranch. Evie sees this place as thrilling and full of risks but she still desperately wants to fully be one of them. Evie starts to spend more and more time in this circle distancing herself from her daily life. This helps to intensify her obsession with Suzanne but makes Evie clueless to the danger that is just around the corner. The amount of violence that will occur in this infamous cult and the things that Evie will be subject to is something that this girl would never have expected when seeing the group of girls in the park.

This is a very thought provoking book and really makes a person think about what people were enduring during this time in the infamous cult. It shows how easily someone can be swept into a different world and not really see their surroundings.
