At the Jan. 16 Varsity Boys Basketball game versus Novato, seniors Zoe Null and Ryan Loeber were announced as the winners of the 2nd Annual Pitti Memorial Scholarship.
The scholarship was created in 2017 to honor Craig Pitti, a teacher, Athletic Director and basketball coach who passed away from cancer in October 2017. Every year, one senior girl and boy who exhibit academic excellence and a strong work ethic in athletics or community service receive $1000 each.
“I applied for this scholarship because I wanted to recognize Craig Pitti for the role model he was and for all the good he’s done for this community,” Loeber said. “It’s an honor winning this scholarship knowing that I’ve followed in the footsteps of previous winners who I looked up to. I hope Craig’s legacy can be continued for many years to come through this amazing program.”
The winners were chosen from 17 applicants who wrote essays about how they want to make a difference in the world. Linnea Pedersen and Juan Camarena-Gonzalez were awarded special recognition.
“It’s a great honor to receive this scholarship,” Null said. “I’ve been very involved with San Marin athletics for the past four years and I’m proud to be repping San Marin for the rest of my college career.”
Additionally, San Marin’s Suits and Sneakers Week has raised $260. This nationwide fundraiser by the American Cancer Society’s Coaches vs. Cancer Program raises money and awareness by having coaches wear sneakers with their suits during games. San Marin is currently ranked 45th out of the high school teams participating in Suits and Sneakers Week.
In the past two years, San Marin raised money through Pitti’s 3-Point Challenge and was ranked first and second in the country for total funds raised. The American Cancer Society now fundraises through Suits and Sneakers Week, rather than the 3-Point Challenge.
