As of the 2019-2020 school year, freshmen are allowed to walk off campus for lunch, provided that they only go to San Marin Plaza. Prior to this year, freshmen have not been allowed off campus. The shift from the previous policy has caused some worry among staff and administration about students coming back to class late, but overall, the faculty feel that the freshmen have proven themselves worthy of this responsibility.
“So far, the freshmen have been very well behaved and have not been coming back late at all,” Campus Supervisor Tanya Ruano said. “But if they start coming back late, their privileges will be revoked.”
Faculty also worry about how students might behave off campus and how this behavior reflects the school.
Since freshmen are now allowed off campus, the lunch rush at Harvest Market area has increased, causing Harvest employees to react accordingly.
“I feel overwhelmed, it is way more crowded than we are used to,” Harvest employee Tom Davis said. “We had to staff extra people at each door to accommodate the extra flow of customers.”
Even though this accommodation was made, the Harvest Market area is still more crowded than it has been in the past. Upperclassmen are also worried about this change because of the way that freshmen classes have behaved off campus in the past.
“In general, freshmen have the tendency to be more rude towards elders, especially at Harvest,” senior Joe Pontes said. “I feel like they should not be allowed to go off campus because they are just going to be more disrespectful than they already are.”
