New staff explain why they would be arrested

Nikki Bannister

Background

Ms. Bannister was originally from Sonoma County and taught previously at Santa Rosa’s Rincon Valley Christian School, and worked in Special Services at Petaluma City Schools. She also lived and taught English in Ecuador. In between then and now, she worked as a bilingual trainer for the County of Marin in Health & Human Services. She studied and taught English/Creative Writing and Math until she discovered languages. Now she teaches Spanish and continues to study Italian, Slovakian and any other language she can find a teacher to teach her. A personal goal of hers since 2007 has been to travel outside of the country at least once per year. So far, she is on track.

If you were arrested with no explanation, what would your friends and family assume you’ve done?

“If I were arrested with no explanation, my friends and family would probably assume I suffered from extreme caffeine deprivation and, as a result, threatened terrible things to any person who stood between me and the precious coffee!”

 

Caroline Carlin

Ms. Carlin, a San Marin alumni, graduated here in 2010, then went to Sonoma State and majored in Human Development. She got her Bachelor’s degree in that, then went to graduate school and got her Master’s degree in school counseling.

If you were arrested with no explanation, what would your friends and family assume you’ve done?

“Trespassing, probably rescuing a cat from a tree and going on private property… I’m a cat person.”

 

John Buzan

Mr. Buzan was on every single committee you could imagine, and any student body position he could get his hands on. He was prom king and ASB president. He became very involved in school and ended up going to UCLA as an alumni scholar.

If you were arrested with no explanation, what would your friends and family assume you’ve done?

“A crime of passion because I’m so passionate about what I do.”

 

Elizabeth Lloyd

For the first six years of Ms. Lloyd’s career, she taught at Heritage High School in Brentwood in the East Bay. She then taught one year at Dougherty Valley High School in San Ramon. Last year she taught at Terra Linda, and this is her ninth year teaching English.

If you were arrested with no explanation, what would your friends and family assume you’ve done?

“They would assume I was arrested for trespassing because I crashed a wedding. I love weddings!!”

 

Matthew Mueller

Mr. Mueller spent the last few years at Kennedy High School, in Richmond. Before that, he taught eight years at St. Joseph of Notre Dame, a Catholic School in Alameda.

If you were arrested with no explanation, what would your friends and family assume you’ve done?

Luis Santos

Mr. Santos came from the private sector, working in the electronic industry as an engineer technician. Then he earned a Masters in Communication and Media Art Design and worked in commercial media production. Him and his wife decided to become teachers when they had children. Now their daughters are both in high school (freshman and junior) at a French school in San Francisco. He is a music composer, media artist and he loves to run, bike, camp and be outdoors.

If you were arrested with no explanation, what would your friends and family assume you’ve done?
“Perhaps it would be for having too much fun. Life is too short. Maybe playing music too loud. Rock n’ Roll !”

 

Brian Khoury

This is his first year teaching.  Previous to this role, he was first a substitute teacher with NUSD and then became a 1:1 Aide for a young man with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).  His experience with him inspired him to get his teaching credential in Special Education.  He finished the coursework last semester and got the internship here at San Marin.  Prior to teaching, he has held various business development roles in Pharmaceuticals and then the wine business.  He’s originally from Ohio and came to California 17 years ago for a 3 month project…and never left!

If you were arrested with no explanation, what would your friends and family assume you’ve done?

“If I were to get arrested, my friends would swear it was because I got caught taking too many honey mustard packets from Chick-fil-A.  Seriously, that stuff is crazy good!  I’ll even go through the drive through sometimes, order a water and when they ask ‘would you like anything else sir’, I’ll say ‘sure, just 50 packets of honey mustard and I’ll be on my way.’”
