The San Marin Interact Club attended the Relay for Life event held by the American Cancer Association, or the ACS, on Saturday, May 19.
The ACS is devoted to finding a way to eradicate cancer and hosts fundraisers and awareness events, such as the Relay for Life, to fund their research.
The Relay for Life also honors those whose lives have been touched by cancer.
Relay participants form teams and take turns walking around a designated course for the span of 24 hours.
“We are asking you to give a day out of your life for those who may not have another,” the ACS said on their website. “Cancer never sleeps, so for one day, neither do we.”
The San Marin Interact Club president junior Jessica Stewart organized for club members to help with the event, including selling cupcakes. She also had the Interact Club sign up for shifts walking around the track for the 24 hours.
Stewart has participated in five Relays prior to becoming president of the Interact Club, loving each experience.
“It’s inspiring to hear from people who don’t know the word ‘quit,’” she said. “Being around so many people trying to do the right thing creates a sense of optimism that participants will carry home.”
