The sport of mountain biking originated on Marin County’s Mount Tamalpais in the 1970s, yet it has not been recognized as one of San Marin’s competitive sports options.
Although not an official school sport, students joined together in a club setting and created their own team.
The club bikes around different parks in Northern California. To give back to Marin County parks, they volunteer around Stafford Lake and help clean up the lake’s bike park.
They practice on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays, with racing taking place on Saturdays. The club itself does not meet often in school, but when they do, it is to structure what practices look like and brainstorm new ideas.
Senior Kieran Sanctuary is a member of San Marin’s Mountain Biking Club and invites new members to be a part of it.
“I think just everyone that’s interested in biking is involved but it’s also not a super competitive thing,” Sanctuary said. “If you just enjoy biking and it’s something you do for fun, you’re more than welcome to come to the team.”
Although the club has been a part of San Marin for many years, there are currently no girls in it, and they encourage any girls who are interested in biking to join. If girls were a part of the club, there would be a wider variety of opportunities available.
