On September 10, San Marin and NUSD officials broke earth on the new stadium lights project.
Construction of the stadium lights and public address system project began in September and is expected to be completed in November.
The project was approved in May 2017 by the NUSD Board of Education following years of lobbying from San Marin students and staff. In June 2016, the Coalition to Save San Marin, a group opposed to the lights, filed a lawsuit against the district to try and block the project.
“[The lights] have been a long time coming, and we are thrilled that this is finally happening,” NUSD Board of Education President Debbie Butler said. “This is not just only going to have Friday night lights, but it’s also not going to take away from the classroom. Kids are going to able to stay in class longer, finish their day out and will be able to have adequate practice time.”
“This is not only just for the students and the Mustangs at San Marin; this is for the Novato community,” Butler continued. “This is going to bring this community together.”
The stadium lights project is projected to cost $1.2 million. NUSD will contribute half of the cost and the San Marin All Sports Boosters will contribute the remaining half.
